The career of Mark Cotgrove, better known to fans of jazzed-up dance music as Snowboy, dates back to 1978, when the DJ and percussionist was slinging beats in London’s funk-minded nightclubs (including the seminal Goldmine). This CD marks Cotgrove’s 15th release with his all-star Latin Section combo, and those years of experience shows—Communication is a confident stride though Afro-Cuban jazz, comparing favorably with the work of giants like Eddie Palmieri and Tito Puente. The former even penned one of the disc’s highlights, leadoff song “Snowboy’s Special”—and Palmeiri rarely donates songs to others, so that counts as high praise. But any one of these conga-heavy tracks, graced with classic-sounding keyboard work, punctuated with exultant horn runs and driven by brilliant percussion play, could pack any dance floor with ease.
