“Francis Alÿs.”
Description
We've been so wowed by the Mexico City–based artist's past projects (especially Fabiola) that this two-story installation—while smarter than most shows out there—was a little disappointing. Alÿs's video The Politics of Rehearsal addresses Latin America's conflicted crush on modernity, but the fragmented piece's wacky elements (Schubert, striptease and Harry Truman) never gel. Bolero (Shoe Shine Blues), a charming animation of a shoe-shiner, makes viewers consider anew the downside of globalization: A room filled with Alÿs's working drawings underscores the cartoon's comment on the devaluation of skilled labor.
